Lyon’s Nemanja Matic and Le Havre’s Hassan Mahgou have been given two-match bans by Ligue 1’s disciplinary committee for covering up anti-homophobia badges on their shirts.
Matic, the most prominent of the two given his history with Chelsea and Manchester United, made headlines for sticking a piece of white tape over the rainbow pride flag on his OL shirt.
Kits had the logo added to their sleeve during the International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia which coincided with the final day of the Ligue 1 season.
Nantes striker Mostafa Mohamed also refused to take part in his team’s for religious reasons and escaped punishment.
Matic and Hassan have also accepted the offer of an educational programme to combat homophobia in football.
Speaking about the issue, French World Cup winner Antoine Griezmann said: “If a gay player wants to come out, he may not have all the French players on his side, but he will have me.”
