Despite praise all round for Bruno Lage’s start to the season, Benfica presidential candidate Cristóvão Carvalho has other ideas.
Benfica have maximum points in the Primeira Liga and mastered a tough Champions League qualifying campaign, and next up have new club elections.
There are six candidates to take over the Lisbon club, and Carvalho has since filled in the populist space with some bold comments.
“With me, Bruno Lage won’t stay beyond the end of his contract [at the end of the season],” he said on SIC.
“I need a coach of the highest level, who has already won the Champions League and who wants to win a Champions League with Benfica.
“There’s only one name in my head: Jürgen Klopp. He even said that Benfica is a great club that he would like to coach one day. Someone who says that has something more than others to be at the club.”
Carvalho also made another startling and unfounded claim, saying he can win the Champions League.
“With today’s Benfica, it’s obvious we can’t win a Champions League,” he said.
“I have a financial plan geared toward that goal. I can promise Benfica fans that, in four or five years, we’ll be playing in a Champions League final.”
