Deniz Undav’s opinion of himself is starting to grate on Germany coach Julian Nagelsmann.
Undav has long been praised by his Stuttgart teammates and the media for his honest winning mentality and as a dressing room leader.
The former Brighton striker has also made his thoughts clear on his substitute role for Germany, publicly calling out Nagelsmann.
Undav did it again after a goal in a 2-1 friendly win over Ghana, and got a remarkably spikey response from his coach.
Speaking in the mixed zone post-match, he continued his bold proclamations, saying: “I’ve had a conversation with the national coach. I know my role.
“But goals like these might change my role. I’m simply trying to accept my role and keep going, give it my all, score goals for the team. That’s the most important thing.”
In his interview Nagelsmann was told about the quotes, and didn’t back down.
“He puts himself under pressure with his statements,” the former Bayern Munich coach said.
“If he can handle that, that’s very good. I didn’t think his performance was good until the goal. He only touched the ball once before scoring.
“That’s what makes a striker. He scored the goal well. But I don’t know if he’ll make that same move after running around for 70 minutes.
“I think I know that we’ll need some game-changers in the summer to decide matches.”
This one will run and run…
