Atletico Madrid’s press officer should probably take Julian Alvarez off duty.
The Argentine striker was key again in his side’s last 16 tie with Tottenham, adding a goal from his first leg double to secure a quarter-final spot.
After the first leg he caused all sorts of problems by commenting on headline links to Barcelona.
Asked if he’d be with Atleti next season he responded ‘maybe yes, maybe no’ much to the fury of the club’s supporters and annoyance of Diego Simeone.
You’d have thought Alvarez would have learned his lesson after a week of headlines, but it turns out you’d be wrong.
Again asked if he was happy in Madrid, he gave a better answer, but one that was still far from comprehensive.
“Yes, thank you,” he simply said.
The backdrop behind Alvarez’s initial comments made matters even worse.
Speaking before the ‘maybe yes, maybe no’ Barcelona president Joan Laporta said in an interview: “Julián should show his desire to come to Barça.
“That’s what we want from all the players we’re interested in.”
