Julen Lopetegui has been left fuming by comments made by Gerard Pique about the 2017 Catalan independence referendum.
On Monday, a clip of an interview the Barcelona legend did with TV3 went viral for an obvious reason.
Pique claimed that during the 2017 Catalan independence fiasco, Spain coach Lopetegui and national team captain Sergio Ramos demanded that he apologise for backing the vote.
Pique said that Lopetegui even drafted a note of what he should say in an upcoming press conference, which the defender went and threw in the bin.
According to TV3, Lopetegui has made it clear through his people that he’s ‘angry and outraged’ by the story which he calls ‘a series of lies’.
Sources claim the West Ham coach feels he was ‘misrepresented and decontextualized’ and there was never any political directive.
The report finishes: “Julen is outraged because this never happened, he made it up. It’s part of an annoying lie.”
