Jude Bellingham shows signs of best form in first match under Jose Mourinho

In just one game under Jose Mourinho Jude Bellingham already looked twice the player than he did last season.

Bellingham hugely struggled under Xabi Alonso and was widely reported to be one of the players against the Spaniard in the dressing room.

Bellingham publicly denied those claims, but it was clear to see he was suffering under Alonso more than anyone.

Having been one of the best players in the world in a stunning debut season, he continued in that vain the next campaign before a year off in 2025/26.

However, his performance as England’s best player at the 2026 World Cup clearly demonstrated that Madrid and Alonso may have been the problem.

Bellingham’s new role under Mourinho

In Mourinho’s first game, a 2-1 win away at Espanyol, Bellingham was back where he’s happy, in the No.10 role in a 4-2-3-1.

He scored the opener, and put in an hour’s display reminiscent of his debut season.

Speaking post-match, Mourinho said: “For me, this is his position; he’s the link to the attackers.

“He’s a player who scores goals and needs to play in a position close to the goal. He can play as a ‘6’ or an ‘8’, but if he plays there, we’re losing his ability to get forward.

“I like the Bellingham who, when he’s in top physical condition, is someone who gives you 90 minutes of hard work, quality, and goal-scoring opportunities.”

Bellingham wasn’t even fully fit, and despite Madrid not being fully convincing, the Englishman was, and he was arguably the biggest piece of good news in their season opener.

Mourinho explains his new midfield

Mourinho added: “We started with Bernardo and Valverde behind him.

“Bernardo has that organizational ability. We lose a little bit of Valverde’s attacking contribution.

“That shot he took that hit the post; if it hadn’t touched him, it would have gone in.

“Valverde, if he plays with Tchouameni or Camavinga, can get into that position more often.

“We’re all getting to know each other, and it’s better that we do so without losing ground.”

With three points in the bag, Madrid haven’t lost any ground, and they’ve gained some in the No.10 position.
