Jose Mourinho has been savaged by a prominent Porto fan for his move to rivals Benfica.
The legendary coach returned to his home country with Benfica 21 years after leaving Porto as a hero with a league and Champions League double in 2004.
Mourinho was born in Lisbon and called himself a Benfica fan in his unveiling, and made a comment that will have hurt up in the north of Portugal.
“None of the clubs I’ve coached made me feel as honoured as being coach of Benfica,” he said.
Sandra Madureira, the wife of Fernando, who was the club’s most prominent fan as the head of the Super Dragoes ultra group, was one of many to respond.
Referring back to a standing ovation Mourinho got when he watched a Porto match just a week earlier, she joked that it was so powerful it gave him brain damage.
“I think that ovation hurt Mourinho…” she wrote on Instagram. “It seems like he ‘fried the popcorn [his brain]’ or is it Alzheimer’s?
“Someone remind him that he won two international titles at the best club in the world.”
