The drama between Joan Laporta and Xavi continues to rumble on at Barcelona even after a 3-0 win over Rayo Vallecano.
It has been widely reported throughout the Spanish media that Laporta has decided to fire head coach Xavi, less than a month on from proudly announcing that he would stay to the world’s media.
The tension is said to have been triggered by Xavi’s comments after a win over Almeria in which he stated that the club can no longer compete with Real Madrid due to economics and Financial Fair Play restrictions.
Such claims were said to have infuriated president Laporta, who refused to respond when he was asked about sacking Xavi ahead of the Rayo clash.
Barcelona’s supporters made their views clear during the match chanting ‘Xavi yes, Laporta no!’ and even singing about sacking the president.
However, it’s now been claimed that Xavi even made things worse by telling Laporta he should be happy about the team finishing second as it guarantees a spot in next year’s Spanish Super Cup.
Sique Rodriguez of Cadena SER claims: “From what they tell me, Laporta came out of this match equally or more angry because Xavi told him that they had to be happy about finishing second because they were going to play in the Super Cup and that this was a step to continue building the team.”
An angry Laporta allegedly replied: “Let’s see if we are going to celebrate being second in the league.”
The outlet also claims that firing Xavi will not be easy, and could cost the club as much as €20million.
