French World Cup winner Steven Nzonzi has announced the end of his Middle Eastern adventure by departing Iranian side Sepahan.
The 2018 champion and 2016 Europa League winner with Sevilla put out a statement with some serious reasoning.
“Thank you to the great people of Isfahan and this beautiful city for the way you welcomed me and my family,” he wrote.
Thank you to the club and the whole organisation, my team mates and everybody at the club.
“Me and my family decided that it was best for us not to come back especially for safety reasons.
“I tried to find the strength but I couldn’t.
“I had a great season, I wish all of you nothing but the best for the upcoming season.”
Nzonzi was likely referring to the conflict between Iran and Israel.
Reports claim Ligue 1 clubs are interested in the holding midfielder’s services, but he could also retire at the age of 36.
