Long earmarked as a unique coaching talent, Feyenoord’s Robin van Persie has proved it again with some odd comments.
The Premier League great made headlines in his first job at Heerenveen when he said he wouldn’t change his tactics after a 9-1 defeat to AZ and it was proved wise.
Now at one of the Eredivisie’s big three he’s struggling again with a run of form that could see him sacked.
Yet a 1-0 win over Utrecht eased things slightly this weekend, and Van Persie showed why he causes so much interest with his line-up and comments.
Midfielder Jakub Moder started as the team’s centre forward, and Van Persie made it clear he’s not interested in goal scorers, despite being one of the best himself.
Asked about striker Casper Tengstedt who was left on the bench, he said: “I explained it to Casper.
“He’s making progress, he can always score a goal, and that’s positive.
“But I also explained to him what I expect from a striker, and one of the last things is scoring goals.
“That might sound strange, but that’s how I see it. I expect a lot of different things from a striker.
“I see scoring goals as more of a bonus. I went over everything with Casper. The expectations are clear on both sides.
“It was a good meeting; we can mostly keep up with each other. I chose Moder; he’s the type of guy who can play anywhere.”
