Eredivisie side FC Twente have announced that they are in discussions with Joshua Brenet over terminating his contract.
The decision comes after the 30-year-old defender was sentenced to a month in prison for twice driving without a licence.
The Dutchman had lost his licence for driving under the influence of alcohol, and a judge in Almelo sentenced him on Tuesday with an unconditional month of imprisonment.
Brenet was arrested twice during traffic checks without a driver’s license in January last year. The first time this happened on January 10 on the Oldenzaalsestraat in Enschede, the second time on January 23 on the A1 near Bathmen, near Deventer.
The judge said in his verdict: “He knew he wasn’t allowed to drive. If you do, you’ll be left with blisters.
“It’s like getting a red card and still continuing to play football. That’s how it comes across to me.”
Brenet is far from a nobody either, the Limburg-born fullback has two caps for the Netherlands, and 109 appearances for Dutch giants PSV, winning the Eredivisie on three occasions.
