Bundesliga 2 side Schalke have offered an update on Edin Dzeko’s worrying-looking shoulder injury.
The 40-year-old striker has been in fine form since a January move from Fiorentina, keeping Schalke top of the second tier and on course for promotion.
However, a late shoulder-barge from Davide Frattesi as Bosnia and Herzegovina beat Italy in their World Cup qualifier saw Dzeko leave in a right state.
The incident came after the Premier League winner already had 120 minutes in his legs at his advanced years and he was taken out of Bosnia’s victorious penalty shoot-out.
Now leading Bosnian outlet Sport Sport claim that tests have shown he will require surgery.
Such an ailment normally requires at least four weeks on the sidelines, and it could be worse with Bosnia concerned about him being back for the World Cup in June.
That’s even worse news for Schalke who could well miss the marksman for the remainder of their promotion push.
Yet the club have some hope, with coach and fellow Bosnian Miron Muslic saying: “I am very, very confident that we will get him back on the pitch in the next few weeks. Edin is a warrior, a fighter.”
Schalke themselves added an updated, but didn’t comment on reports of a broken collarbone.
The club wrote: “Edin Dzeko suffered a shoulder injury in Tuesday evening’s international match.
“His shoulder will undergo thorough examination, and the diagnostic process will continue even after his return to Gelsenkirchen.
“Head coach Miron Muslic plans to play without Dzeko in the home game against Karlsruher SC.”
Dzeko has six goals and three assists in eight games since signing and has given the side a whole new dimension.
However, there is some respite, as the man he was meant to replace, Moussa Sylla, will be able to step in after a January move to MLS collapsed.
