Beerschot’s ultras promised to protest another loss for Dirk Kuyt’s side, and they followed through in dramatic circumstances.
A leader of the ultra group said supporters would disrupt the Antwerp derby against Royal Antwerp if their side were 2-0 at half-time again, but they only found themselves one down.
However, soon after the match resumed they conceded three in four minutes and the protests began.
In the 75th minute referee Lothar D’hondt stopped the Belgian Pro League match due to purple and white flares on the pitch.
They then tried to restart the game, but failed, and offered Beerschot the chance to complete the final 15 minutes behind closed doors midweek.
However, Kuyt‘s side declined the opportunity, with a 4-0 loss turning into a 5-0 forfeit.
Beerschot will now face a disciplinary committee and likely be dealt a partial stadium closure for their next home match.
Meanwhile, Kuyt may well find himself unemployed. The former Liverpool and Netherlands great got the Antwerp side promoted to the top flight last season but this term has been a disaster.
In nine matches they have just a single point and sit seven adrift at the bottom of the Pro League.
