Dinamo Zagreb have defied the odds, but not in a good way.
The Croatian side exited the Champions League last night despite beating AC Milan 2-1.
Starting their campaign with a 9-2 defeat to Bayern Munich was critical for Fabio Cannavaro’s side who ended up with a goal difference of -7, leaving them the lowest-placed team on 11 points, in 25th, one place out of the play-offs.
If that wasn’t painful enough, sports data giants Opta claimed it never should have happened.
With many trying to predict the cut-off point for the play-offs and last 16, Opta ran their computers at the start of the new league phase season.
Yet, in 50,000 simulations, 11 points guaranteed a top-24 finish and play-off football.
