Atlético Madrid are nearing an agreement to extend Diego Simeone’s contract until 2027.
According to multiple reports, only minor details remain to be sorted out before the official signing, which is expected to take place in the coming days.
The Argentine coach has already given his approval to continue with Atleti.
Simeone and president Miguel Angel Gil Marín have held meetings over an extension, albeit on a reduced salary.
‘Cholo’ is now close accepting a three-year deal, despite his initial preference for just two more seasons.
If the contract is finalized for an additional three years, both parties will need to work out the specific details of the new salary.
In any case, it seems likely that there will be a significant reduction, possibly exceeding 20%, depending on whether they agree on a two- or three-year extension.
With this renewal, the Argentine coach would extend his long-standing relationship with Atlético Madrid to a total of 15 years, beginning with his initial coaching contract in 2012.
His current contract was set to expire next summer. During this period, Simeone has overseen a total of 641 matches as the head of the red and white club, achieving two La Liga titles, two Europa League titles, and one Copa del Rey.
Additionally, he was recognized as the world’s best coach for his performance during the 2015/16 season.
