It’s not just the French public who seem to have had enough of Didier Deschamps, but also many journalists, too.
The 2018 World Cup-winning coach saw his France side knocked out of Euro 2024 by Spain at the semi-final stage, losing 2-1 after scoring their first goal from open play at the tournament.
Rated as joint-favourites with England ahead of the summer competition, the results and performances were undoubtedly disappointing, and have led to many calls for Deschamps to be replaced by Zinedine Zidane.
It looks like that won’t happen, though, with the semi-final berth enough to trigger a two-year contract extension for the 2026 World Cup.
That’s infuriated RMC Sport editor Daniel Riolo who asked Deschamps to resign after the game.
“You are formidable…” he replied. “I have just lost a semi-final and you ask me to leave?
“Ask my president what he intends to do. But he knows very well what you think, the president…”
Responding to those comments on the radio, Riolo went on the attack, saying: “All right, we understand that Deschamps wants to stay in his place. But the problem will arise sooner or later, he has been on the bench for 12 years…
“Now that’s enough. He should go play padel in peace in Monaco, in the sun. Move on to other things.
“Everyone wants Zizou and Deschamps doesn’t like that. After all, he has never been a protagonist: when he played, Platini claimed he was the team’s water carrier.”
