With Barcelona struggling for a venue for their May Clasico with Real Madrid, eyes are starting to focus on Wembley.
Barcelona‘s contract with their temporary home of Montjuic expires in April, and although the deal has already been extended once, there won’t be a repeat with concerts already scheduled for the spring.
The renovated Spotify Camp Nou’s completion date continues to be pushed back, and now reports claim that Barca’s board are considering playing the match outside of Spain.
Cadena SER and other outlets specify that the current deal expires on April 23rd and concerts – including The Rolling Stones – are scheduled for May. The Clasico against Madrid is on the weekend of May 10th.
They add: ‘Neither the USA nor Asia are being considered, but a large continental stadium is being considered for a massive displacement of Barcelona fans. There is San Siro, Paris, Rome, London and little else.”
A poll in Sport has seen an overwhelming majority of fans vote for Wembley given the London stadium’s world-class capacity for hosting big football matches, Barcelona have also twice won the Champions League there, in 2011 and 1992.
One person who seemingly won’t be standing in the way of Wembley Clasico is LaLiga president Javier Tebas.
“We have not been informed of anything – about the fact that the Clásico cannot be played at Barça’s home ground – only what I have been able to read,” he said.
“There was talk outside Spain, but we know nothing. In fact, if there is a problem of force majeure due to the works, as there has been on other occasions, it has been played outside their stadium.
“They would have to have the authorisation of Real Madrid, and then it would be studied.”
