Thomas Muller is part of a consortium that has acquired 90% of Primeira Liga side Estrela da Amadora.
Former Germany and Bayern Munich teammate Mats Hummels is also involved, along with ex-Bayern man Yan Sommer.
A statement from the club read: “Estrela Amadora hereby announces that the process for the acquisition of a 90 percent majority stake in SAD’s share capital by an international consortium led by ADvantage and LEAD, with support from KI Group, has been completed.
“The new ownership structure unites investors with experience in sports, investment and technology. Furthermore, it includes several strategic investors with connections to international football, including Thomas Müller, Mats Hummels, Yann Sommer and Lucas Hernández.
“The new structure of Estrela da Amadora aims above all to respect the history and identity of the club. Amadora and the fans should continue to be at the heart of all decisions. At the same time, a solid and sustainable future for Estrela should be built.”
The Lisbon side have undergone a massive rise in value in just six years.
Back in 2020 bought the club for just €72,000 when they were in the second division.
Footballers buying teams is nothing new, but this certainly is, given the lack of investment in Portugal outside of the big three of Benfica, Porto and Sporting.
It’s also unusual for the investors to still be playing, with Mats Hummels the only one of the trio who is retired.
Thomas Muller is still playing in MLS in Vancouver after spending his career at Bayern, while Sommer is with Club Brugge after leaving Inter.
