On April 24 Xavi reaffirmed his commitment to Barcelona, now exactly a month later, he’s set to be replaced by Hansi Flick.
Multiple reports claim that former treble-winning Bayern Munich manager Flick will be Barcelona’s next head coach, with president Joan Laporta set to sever ties with Xavi in a remarkable turn of events.
On January 27, Xavi announced he would leave at the end of the season, and Laporta insisted he would have fired the coach earlier if he wasn’t a club legend.
Then, as the season progressed and the wins racked up, Laporta made Xavi’s continuity a priority, something he achieved on April 24 with a new deal for the upcoming season.
Now, following comments from the head coach that the club can’t compete financially with Real Madrid, Laporta’s fury has seemingly led to a complete U-turn.
Xavi will now depart after a series of public flip-flops from Laporta, but it gets far worse than that.
Cadena SER reports that in Xavi’s new April deal, he negotiated a €20million termination clause. Before that he was leaving for free.
Given Barcelona’s perilous financial situation, Laporta’s latest mismanagement seems to be one of the most ridiculous of the lot.
