Having not played for Lens since August due to a heart issue, Kevin Danso is now set to undergo surgery.
The Austria centre-back had earlier failed a medical during a summer move to Roma and was left frustrated by the disruption.
However, it’s now emerged that things are more serious than first thought, with Kronen Zeitung in Austria reporting that scarring has been found on his heart.
Danso‘s damage will be cauterised and repaired through a cardiac catheter procedure.
A full recovery is expected, and an official statement should also be on its way soon.
The news may come as a surprise to Danso, who expressed his anger when his €25million move to Roma collapsed in August.
Speaking at the time, he said: “Both the doctors of the ÖFB [Austrian FA] and the medical department of RC Lens have followed me closely and examined me regularly in recent years.
“Most recently, I was thoroughly checked at the start of the preseason in Lens. Nothing unusual was ever found.
“That is why the interpretations of the medical check in Rome are extremely irritating for those around me and for me they are in no way comprehensible.”
