Unai Simon never forgets a face, as he proved in Spain’s latest press conference.
The Athletic Bilbao No.1 was sitting down for pre-Nations League duties when his pupils began to dilate and his hand started supporting his face at the sight of the first questioner.
Fernando Burgos, a journalist from Onda Cero, asked a couple of standard questions, to which Simon refused to answer.
“Fernando, with all due respect to my teammates and everyone else, after what happened between us at the European Championship, I’m not going to answer any of your questions, okay?” he said.
The spat originated at Euro 2024 after Spain knocked out hosts Germany and Burgos asked him about ‘dirty football’ with Simon mistakenly thinking he meant Spain.
After clarification, Simon then defended Germany, and the interview didn’t end on the best note.
Discussing the awkward chat later on, Burgos said: “He’s an alien and can’t come here with that attitude. It makes me angry to ask questions of these kinds of people.
“It’s regrettable and pathetic. He shouldn’t come here anymore, I don’t even want to see him.”
