Athletic Bilbao are in ‘advanced’ negotiations to bring in Edin Terzic as their next coach.
The LaLiga side are progressing with their search after Ernesto Valverde announced he will step down at the end of the current season.
Leading Sky Germany reporter Patrick Berger claims that former Borussia Dortmund man Terzic is tied to presidential candidate Jon Uriarte who is the favourite for the club’s upcoming elections.
Terzic, 43, hasn’t coached since 2024 with his last game being the Champions League final.
A divisive figure due to a perceived lack of tactical nous but exceptional man management, he lost the final to Real Madrid having been publicly challenged over his tactics by Mats Hummels.
Terzic was also infamously in charge of BVB’s final day Bundesliga collapse against Mainz in 2023 when they drew their last match of the season at home to give Bayern Munich the title.
He has, though, won a DFB Pokal, with Dortmund being his only senior job in top level coaching.
Terzic has also been a constant subject of speculation with Italian sides Roma and Milan both linked, and his long time assistant recently commented that he can’t imagine a third season out of work.
Despite their Basque-only policy on the pitch, Athletic have often gone foreign in the dugout, with Terzic’s fellow German Jupp Heynckes coaching them twice.
