It’s now been several months since rumours first began over a return to Rosario Central, but Angel Di Maria doesn’t appear any closer to a solution.
The Benfica superstar has long been linked with a move back to his first club, and things appeared to be getting very serious towards the end of the Liga Portugal season.
Di Maria’s family home in Rosario had already been targetted by gangs with threats about his return, but after deciding to leave his family in Miami and commute from Buenos Aires, it looked like the deal was on.
However, more gangs responded to that news with an attack on a petrol station in May, shooting out the windows and leaving a note saying they were ‘waiting’ for his return.
The first incident at his family home saw a note left which included the words: “Tell your son Ángel not to come back to Rosario, otherwise we will ruin him by killing a member of his family. Even Pullaro (the governor of the province, Maximiliano Pullaro) will not save you.”
Pullaro has now responded to the saga with Di Maria in the headlines again, playing for Argentina at the Copa America.
“All those who threatened Di Maraa were arrested immediately,” Pullaro began.
“The protection conditions are totally different. If he is willing to accept the ways that the State can to guarantee his security, that is, the loss of some freedoms, we will immediately be willing to do so.”
A few weeks earlier Security Minister Patricia Bullrich also commented on the matter.
“I spoke two or three times with Di María’s father. They were very scared and I understand why,” she said.
“They [the gangs] choose the most well-known people and cause a lot of upset. I call this narcoterrorism.
“It is now a personal and family decision.”
