Club Brugge’s top brass have headed back to Belgium after negotiations with Benfica over Andreas Schjelderup hit a snag.
Nieuwsblad and Record claim that Jose Mourinho has ‘frozen’ negotiations after the Norwegian’s two-goal performance in Benfica’s stunning 4-2 win over Real Madrid.
Speaking post-match, Mourinho commented: “There’s a lot of talk about him, but he’s played all four of the last matches.
“I believe this Andreas is better than I expected. He’s more like what I’m looking for, and not everyone can play.
“This is a guy who still has a long way to go. It’s one thing to be for sale, but another to get offers for him.
“You don’t get to the World Cup by going to a weaker league and a weaker team. If his goal is to get to the World Cup, it’s with matches like these.”
Nieuwsblad add that although Brugge executives have headed home disappointed, negotiations could well continue with Schjelderup keen on the move, having been close to signing before.
