Gerard Pique’s views on the world outside of Barcelona have again caused controversy.
The former defender has never made any secrets about his Catalan pro-independence stance and has stressed it again when talking about the worldwide affection for Barca.
Speaking to a Catalan media outlet, he very passionately said: “It’s impossible for a Frenchman who comes from Lyon—let’s take Samu [Aghehowa] as an example—or a Brazilian, an Argentinian, or an Italian, to feel the same…
“The same as a Catalan who, from the age of three, when he can already understand, goes to Camp Nou and has spent his entire life linked to Barça.
“It’s impossible. We can’t pretend that, because it doesn’t work that way.”
The comments are nothing out of the ordinary for Pique, and former players of other teams may feel the same.
Yet given the political tensions in Spain, the reaction hasn’t been all too measured.
