Thierry Henry’s stint as France’s Olympic football coach has hit a number of stumbling blocks, and now there’s another blow for the iconic striker.
Organisers of Paris 2024 have dropped the price of Category D football tickets to just €15, a minimum saving of €36 across each of the group stage matches.
It’s reported that of the 10 million available across each round, one million are still available for purchase, a disproportionate number compared to many other Olympic sports.
As the coach of France‘s U21s, Henry has taken charge of the U23s for Paris 2024, with a squad that’s allowed just three overage players.
Given the abundance of talent in the country and the ability to shine at a home tournament, Henry had high hopes of selecting an elite squad, but with the tournament not governed by FIFA, teams were allowed to reject requests for their players.
That saw Henry’s dreams of Olivier Giroud, Kylian Mbappe and Antoine Griezmann shattered, with his overage players instead Alexandre Lacazette, Jean-Philippe Mateta and Loic Bade.
Perhaps not helping Paris 2024’s chances of selling tickets was the performance of the senior team at Euro 2024, with France knocked out at the semi-final stage, despite playing some dire football and scoring just once from open play.
