Marseille’s mayor Benoit Payan has spoken out against the likely signing of Manchester United’s Mason Greenwood.
Greenwood, who spent last season on loan at Getafe, is set to sign for OM permanently in a £27million deal.
Payan has commented on the matter in strong terms, saying: “I don’t want my club to be covered in the shame of someone who hits his wife.
“Greenwood’s behaviour is unspeakable, unacceptable. Hitting his wife… I saw images that deeply shocked me. Massacring his wife in this way is unworthy of a man and I believe he cannot have a place in this team.”
Greenwood was arrested in January 2022 on suspicion of rape, assault and making threats to kill after images and videos surfaced online. The Crown Prosecution Service dropped the case in February 2023 due to ‘a combination of the withdrawal of key witnesses and new material’.
