Anderlecht v Genk to be replayed due to VAR error in European first

In a first since video assistant reviews were introduced in major leagues, a match will be replayed due to an error.

Anderlecht beat Genk 2-1 in the Belgian Pro League on December 23, but there was a controversial penalty incident at 0-0.

Genk captain Bryan Heynen saw his penalty saved Kasper Schmeichel, and Yira Sor fired home the rebound.

VAR images showed that Sor was already in the area when the spot-kick was taken, so the referee cancelled the goal and awarded a free-kick to Anderlecht.

However, subsequent complaints from Genk have highlighted the fact that Anderlecht’s Yari Verschaeren has also entered the area, so the correct decision would have been to order a retake of the penalty.

Rather than moving on from the controversy the Belgian FA [KBVB] have now ordered a replay after the decision and game ended in Anderlecht’s favour.

A statement read: “The Disciplinary Council of Professional Football has ruled that the Anderlecht -KRC Genk match at the end of last year should be replayed.

“The Disciplinary Council has declared itself competent to rule on the matter.

“This overturns the previous decision of the Department of Professional Referees not to replay the match.

“The Council has decided to uphold KRC Genk’s argument that the referees incorrectly applied the rules in the penalty phase of the action in question.

“KRC Genk hopes that a date will be found soon to play the match again.”
