FC Porto manager Sergio Conceicao is likely to face a hefty fine for his comments after his side’s latest performance.
Porto’s season went from bad to worse with a 2-2 draw against Famalicao, leaving them eight points from Benfica in second, and at risk of being leapfrogged by Vitoria Guimaraes and Braga.
Outside of a pair of decent displays against Arsenal in the Champions League, there’s been little to write home about for Porto, who haven’t helped themselves in the media.
A joint statement from the players about refereeing made many unwanted headlines after a 1-0 defeat to Estoril in March, and things got even more crazy when president Pinto da Costa said referees turned against the team following Andre Villas-Boas’ announcement to run against him.
Conceicao has now made matters worse with some provocative comments after their latest poor showing.
“There are very dubious situations,” he said. “It is very easy to send off our players.
“I can remember one or two situations in which it was the second yellow card for the Famalicão player.
“I don’t just want to talk about those situations, we could and should have done more in the first half. Put simply and easily.
“They want to put this northern region off the map of sporting success, which the team has to have in Portugal and in Europe.
“This game was more of the same, in relation to the three teams [Porto, Sporting, Benfica].”
