The Cameroon Football Association [Fécafoot] and president Samuel Eto’o have declared the appointment of new head coach Marc Brys ‘invalid’ in a rather bizarre turn of events.
61-year-old Belgian Brys was named Cameroon coach on April 8 and was filmed signing an agreement with Minister of Sports, Narcisse Mouelle Kombi.
However, Fécafoot president Eto’o wasn’t present for the ceremony and it was reported that he didn’t approve of the choice, and felt he’d been passed over.
The drama seemed to have subsided in recent weeks and Brys even named his squad for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers against Cape Verde and Angola.
However, a statement from Fécafoot now claims that the entire technical staff of the Indomitable Lions, headed by Marc Brys, had been suspended with immediate effect.
According to association chairman Eto’o, ‘there was never a legal and regulatory framework to appoint Brys and his technical staff’.
In a statement, Fécafoot said: “The immediate consequence of these decisions, which were taken in violation of all legal and regulatory provisions, is the suspension with immediate effect of the staff of the Indomitable Lions, headed by Mr. Marc BRYS.”
Responding to the latest developments, Brys told Belgian outlet Nieuwsblad: “Am I fired? That seems like fake news to me.”
