Sporting CP celebrated their second Portuguese league championship in four years on Sunday and unsurprisingly manager Ruben Amorim was the main event.
The coaching sensation picked up his second Liga Portugal crown after already ending the team’s 19-year hiatus at the top of the table in 2021.
On that occasion, Covid-19 restrictions were still in place, putting a dampener on celebrations, but that was very much not the case this time around as fans lined the streets of Lisbon.
Due to his exploits, Amorim has been linked to Liverpool and West Ham, and flew over to meet both clubs in April, a decision which backfired and he later expressed his regret over.
Taking to the stage at Marquês de Pombal to close out the ceremony, Amorim joked: “Let’s get this over with as I have a plane to catch tomorrow.”
Then he said: “It’s too early for this joke. I want to take advantage of the fact that the entire staff is here, who don’t have as much media presence, and are part of the success. A round of applause for the staff.
“They said that we would only win championships every 18 years, that we only won because we didn’t have an audience or that we would never be two-time champions again.
“We’ll see…” he finished before holding out the microphone and dropping it.
Later asked about next season, he added: “Sporting has what it takes to be two-time champions. With me at the helm? Yes, of course”
