Robin van Persie is back on the brink at Feyenoord, but won’t be giving up any time soon.
The Premier League great was on shaky ground to start the year with with KNVB Beker and Europa League exits, but there were some signs of recent improvements with a three-game winning run in the Eredivisie.
Such form eased the pressure on Van Persie, with Feyenoord looking well on course for second in the league and Champions League football.
However, a 2-0 disaster against Twente and now a 3-3 draw against second bottom NAC sees their top two hopes on the brink, and the fans are blaming the coach.
Fans chanted ‘Get lost Robin’ even before the game, and even more venom was brought into those chants as things spiralled out of control.
Asked what he made of the reception, he responded: “I’ve heard it. It’s not exactly fun.
“Everyone is entitled to their opinion. Supporters choose for themselves how they support their club. It’s their right to do so in their own way.”
Van Persie expects to continue
Speaking about his future, he added: Van Persie says the criticism doesn’t bother him much. “I do my job for Feyenoord. And I do it as best I can.
“I believe in it all. I believe in myself. I’m not a runaway. I wasn’t as a player. I’m not as a manager.
“I can take a hit and will continue at Feyenoord. I’ll keep doing what I can influence. I’ll keep working hard. There are a few things we need to improve on.”
Good luck explaining that to the board…
