Robin van Persie’s latest press conference again revolved around Raheem Sterling.
Feyenoord face NAC this weekend in what should be an easy win, but the Rotterdam side are again facing questions about their decision making.
Van Persie previously seemed to acknowledge that Sterling is unlikely to gain full fitness at Feyenoord, something the Dutch media aren’t at all happy with.
Speaking about his two underwhelming substitute appearances, Van Persie said: “I believe in Sterling, I’m happy with the progress he’s making.
“He’s now in week three of his preseason, and I’m taking that into account.
“I’m hearing here and there that not everyone is taking that context into account. I am.”
Van Persie gets in tense exchange over Sterling
Van Persie was then asked if getting Sterling up to fitness can be combined with winning matches or if he’s a deadweight, and again had to stand up for the winger.
“We certainly hope so; that’s our goal,” he responded.
“I also understand that we need to win on Sunday, but I believe that Sterling, like other players, will contribute.
“But the reason you’re asking this question means you don’t believe that?”
The journalist in question then recited Van Persie saying Sterling will need five to six weeks to reach full fitness, so there’s no point in playing him for 30 minutes.
“But I think that player can physically do everything he can in that half-hour,” the coach responded.
“I believe he’ll have a greater impact in the coming weeks.”
