Despite a comfortable 4-0 win over Moreirense, Benfica still chose to back Jose Mourinho over what they deemed a clear penalty.
The Eagles kept their unbeaten Primeira Liga start in tact thanks to a Vangelis Pavlidis hat-trick, but they could’ve had more.
The Greek striker was taken down in the box, and despite the defender possibly getting a touch on the ball, Mourinho pointed it out post-match, saying: “A penalty like that is forgotten because the result was 4-0.”
That’s not too unusual, but Benfica posting the coach’s comments and footage of the penalty was, and could possibly become a theme amid the constant refereeing hysteria in Portugal.
