Barcelona could activate FIFA’s newly implemented Club Protection Program (CPP) to gain compensation for the injury Pedri sustained against Germany.
The Spain midfielder had Toni Kroos smash into his knee in the fifth minute of their Euro 2024 quarter-final, ending his match and almost certainly his tournament.
Spain’s medical team have diagnosed an internal lateral sprain in his left knee, but further tests will take place today.
Should Pedri be out for an extended period yet again, Barcelona can claim compensation using the CPP on the 28th day of inaction.
Compensation is calculated using a player’s salary, and there’s a maximum amount of €20,548 per day for a period of up to 365 days, with a maximum of €7,500,000 per footballer and accident.
The programme is designed specifically for players like Pedri, with the Barca star famously playing 73 matches for club and country during the 2020/21 season, leading to a series of extended lay-offs.
This one wasn’t a fatigue issue, though, it was instead a poor piece of play from Kroos in his final match, and he’s since publically apologised.
“I’m sorry and get well soon to Pedri!” he wrote on social media. “It wasn’t my intention to hurt you. A speedy recovery and all the best. You are a great player.”
Spain won the match 2-1 in extra time and will face France in the semi-finals.
