Joan Laporta is more than happy for Lionel Messi to get involved in his re-election campaign.
Laporta, who is seeking a fourth term and second back-to-back as Barcelona president, has seen Messi used against him during his camaign.
His rivals have used his role in Messi’s 2021 exit against him, and now facing off in a head-to-head against Victor Font, things have got tougher.
Font is backed by Barca legend Xavi, who claims that Messi was ready to return to the club in 2023 when he was head coach.
Xavi says everything was agreed, but Laporta put an end to the deal because ‘he had all the power, and Messi would misuse that power’.
Some Spanish journalists have claimed that Messi’s entourage has briefed that Xavi’s version of events is true, while LaLiga president Javier Tebas has rubbished it.
Laporta appears to be backing Tebas’ hopes, saying he’s happy for Messi to speak out.
Laporta tackles Messi head on
When asked if he was afraid of Messi commenting, he said: “Not at all.
“I’m convinced he would say the same thing as me, because the conversation was what it was, unless they change their version of events.
“But I don’t think they’ll change their story because Jorge [Messi’s father] and I have always understood each other.
“What we also don’t want is to divert attention from what matters to the Barça fans, because they are currently electing the president and the board, and in this context, Xavi’s comments add absolutely nothing.
“Did he steal votes from me? The ballot box will tell.”
Laporta’s rival Font is also betting on Messi speaking out.
“I don’t think Messi will speak out between now and Sunday, but I hope he does,” he said.
“I hope he explains the truth—about his departure from the club and his attempt to return in 2023—so that the members don’t go to vote misled and under the illusion created by Hansi Flick and the young players.”
