FIFA’s newly released Global Transfer Report has some interesting names in the rankings.
Football’s governing body issued their annual figures from the 2024 summer and winter windows, and it was no surprise to see PSG top with an almighty splurge on the likes of Joao Neves and Desire Doue after Kylian Mbappe’s departure.
Manchester United slotted in second, but surprisingly third is Lyon who spend reasonable fees on a large number of players, pushing them up 45 places in the standings from 48th last year.
Bayern Munich are fourth which isn’t much of a surprise, but Brighton next is fifth perhaps is until you remember all the spare cash they’ve had from Chelsea buying their best players.
But the biggest jump of all is Atletico Madrid who rank sixth, up 120 places from 126th in 2023.
Much of that is thanks to £82million Julian Alvarez who came in from Manchester City and has instantly looked like a world-class edition as the most expensive transfer of the year.
It looked like Diego Simeone may have spent well too up until a recent loss of form saw them sink down the table, and the less said about Lyon the better.
