The hotly-contested race for FC Porto‘s presidency has continued to get nasty with Andre Villas-Boas attacking rival Pinto da Costa.
Former treble-winning Porto manager Villas-Boas will rival Da Costa on April 27, and has a chance of dislodging the incumbent who has been in his post since 1982.
The campaign to take over the Dragoes has been embroiled in violence, arrests and plenty of unsavoury public comments.
Now Villas-Boas has taken his turn to attack his 86-year-old rival with just over a month until voting.
Speaking to Publico, the former Chelsea and Tottenham manager said: “I have a lot of respect for the president, but I think he is not in a position to preside over another four years at FC Porto.
“What lies ahead for FC Porto after 2024 is a direct line of succession for one of your vice presidents.
“It seems increasingly evident to me that, in a certain way, some people are taking advantage of the president’s weakness and of his incapacity, so to speak.
“I hardly thought that the president could run again in 2024. Naturally, he is free to do so and raises this challenge and the sense of responsibility and demand.
“Recent years have led FC Porto to financial ruin and a loss of sporting competitiveness. In my opinion, I always thought he wouldn’t reapply.
“I decided to move forward with this candidacy even if he was my opponent – I feel that FC Porto needs a new direction.”
