Malaysia handed massive FIFA fine over nationality fraud with former Eredivisie regular suspended

Lies about his grandfather's birthplace cost former ADO player Hector Hevel and Malaysia dearly: FIFA imposes penalties

The Malaysian football federation [FAM] have confirmed a massive €375,293 fine from FIFA over the nationality fraud case.

The FAM have said they are ‘considering their next steps’ as three friendly matches were also defaulted to 3-0 defeats.

They were home wins against Palestine (1-0) and Singapore (2-1), and a draw against Cape Verde (1-1), in which FIFA say seven players without links to the country were fielded.

The investigation revealed that Hector Hevel, Jon Irazabal, Gabriel Palmero, Facundo Garces, Rodrigo Holgado, Imanol Machuca, and Joao Brandao Figueiredo did not, in fact, have any parents or grandparents born in Malaysia, a mandatory requirement for selection to the national team.

Hevel is the most prominent of the seven, having been an Eredivisie regular for ADO Den Hag and played in the Europa League.

All of the players have been suspended.

FAM have any wrongdoing and indicated its intention to appeal the case to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).
