Mats Hummels’ move to AS Roma isn’t going well at all, and now Sky Germany are reporting that retirement is on the cards.
The Germany legend left Borussia Dortmund on a free transfer during the summer and after much deliberation, he ended up in Serie A.
Hummels missed Roma‘s first three games with injury, and then the man who signed him, Daniele De Rossi, was sacked in his first game on the bench.
The defender then remained on the bench under Ivan Juric 10 out of the next 11 matches, playing just 23 minutes and scoring an own goal in a 5-1 defeat to Fiorentina.
Hummels was becoming increasingly disgruntled, something he aired on social media, and now with Juric gone, he may finally get some game time.
However, with Roma such a circus that they’ve brought 73-year-old Claudio Ranieri out of retirement to coach the team, Sky say Hummels could either leave or retire in January if things don’t improve.
Ranieri, on his part, has at least suggested that things will get better, commenting: “I have spent some time watching games and I ask myself: Why can’t Mats Hummels play? How is that possible?”
Let’s see if he keeps true to his word…
