Defeat to Athletic Bilbao could spell disaster for Jose Mourinho, just six months into his job at Fenerbahce.
AS report that the legendary Portuguese coach‘s future is at stake in the Europa League clash thanks to an inconsistent start.
A loss to an in-form Athletic side could see Fenerbahce drop to as many as five points from automatic qualification for the knockout stages of the competition. It could also see them move closer to missing out on the knockouts altogether.
On top of that, a 1-0 defeat to Besiktas in the Turkish Super Lig at the weekend has further damaged things.
Fenerbahce had built up a head of steam with seven wins in eight games in all competitions, helping them catch up on leaders Galatasaray, but the loss moves them six points behind.
Having been the league’s big spenders during the summer with a €30million net outlay on top of Mourinho‘s hefty contract, a trophyless campaign may well not be deemed good enough, particularly when they missed on the title by just three points last season.
