Jose Mourinho wants a better contract at Benfica, but for now, it’s not on its way.
The 2010 European treble winner signed a two-year deal when he arrived at the start of the 2025/26 season.
He’s made clear it has a break clause after the current campaign when openly flirting with Real Madrid.
Such a move now looks impossible following his criticism of Vinicius Jr, while doubts over a switch to the Portugal national team are increasing due to a trophyless campaign for Benfica.
As such, it’s being widely reported that Mourinho wants a more substantial contract so he can start building for the future.
Mourinho won’t be getting a Benfica renewal soon
Yet one leading journalist has brutally described Benfica’s response.
Asked what the club have said on CMTV Record deputy editor Vítor Pinto started playing the sound of crickets from his phone.
“You hear this noise, don’t you?” he said. “Right, this is Benfica’s response to José Mourinho’s renewal request.
“So, anyone who doubts what the newspapers are saying, here it is. This is Benfica’s response to the request, offer, proposal, availability — whatever you want to call it — from José Mourinho.
“Here it is. Here is the sound. I don’t know if it was the president’s communications department, the football department, someone spying in the office… Look, here is the response.”
Pinto didn’t rule out a new deal for Mourinho, but made clear it’s far from a priority for Benfica and president Rui Costa.
He added: “It’s normal that it takes time, because Benfica is very busy, Benfica is very busy.
“They have many midweek games now — so it’s normal that there hasn’t been time yet to talk about the renewal. Let’s wait to see how long…”
