It’s now or never for Dayot Upamecano.
The impending Bayern Munich free agent has had plenty of spotlight on himself this season, and interest from Real Madrid hasn’t helped.
Vastly improved since Vincent Kompany’s arrival, Bayern are doing everything to convince him to stay, especially sporting director Christoph Freund
“So far there is no final decision, but we are very, very far along,” the Austrian commented at a fan event.
“Upa has been performing at a world-class level for the last year and a half, ever since Vinnie arrived.
“For us, that would be a very important contract extension.”
However, to Freund’s god cop, it only took a day for Jan Christian Dreesen’s bad cop to arrive.
Addressing Upamecano’s situation, the Bayern CEO was far more stern.
“Upa has received an offer from us, which we have also improved,” he began.
“This has already been discussed several times with his advisors and now again with him personally.
“I believe he should sign what he has on the table now, because things aren’t going to get any better.
“We made him an exceptionally good offer because he’s played very well for the past year and a half. He’s certainly one of the best centre-backs in the world.
“We won’t go along with every bit of nonsense regarding the contract negotiations.
“If you chew gum for too long, the flavour eventually fades. That’s why this shouldn’t drag on like chewing gum.”
